Lignite Coal
Lignite, also known as brown coal, is the lowest rank of coal in the coal classification series.
It is formed from compressed peat and contains high moisture and volatile matter.
Lignite is widely used as a fuel in thermal power plants, especially in regions with abundant local reserves.
Uses of Lignite Coal
1. Power Generation: Lignite-based thermal power plants, Fluidized bed combustion boilers
2. Cement Manufacturing: Lignite serves as a kiln fuel
3. Gasification: Coal gasification plants, Syngas production, Hydrogen generation
4. Industrial Boilers & Heating: Brick kilns, Lime kilns, Small-scale industrial boilers, Rural and agricultural heating systems
5. Fertilizer & Chemical Industry: Used in soil conditioners, fertilizers, and animal feed supplements.
6. Activated Carbon Production: Low-grade lignite is processed to create activated carbon & filter media
7. Briquetting: Lignite briquettes are used in: domestic fuel, industrial heating, small boilers
